There are three trails that you can use to make your way to the summit. The entrance to the Main Trailhead Trail is conveniently located near a parking lot and the Yufutozanguchi bus stop. This is the most popular trail and has several amenities, such as bathrooms. From here, you can make your way to the entrance to the National Forest filled with evergreens in about half an hour before moving on to the top over the next two hours. The West and East Trailheads are considerably more difficult and don’t feature rest areas. These routes should only be done with experienced hikers in accompaniment. As you near the top, you’ll be able to choose which peak to head for. The East Peak is easier and has a panoramic view, while the West Peak is harder with chains required to complete the ascent. The view from here is also spectacular.
In the summer, bring a hat as there is very little shade on the way up. Also, because the winds can whip up and die down quickly, it’s useful to bring a light jacket that you can remove or put on when needed. Insects come out as the temperatures climb, so cover those exposed arms and legs! Come winter, a hat covering your ears that fits firmly so it doesn’t blow off is recommended. Fleece and down coats will help to keep you warm, while the clothes underneath should be quick drying so your sweat doesn’t make you cold. Regardless of the season, you should always carry a first aid kit, drinking water, food and a change of clothes.
